Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915- 1973)
 
Musical prodigy as a child, who played the electric guitar, sang gospel with her mother's traveling band and at six years old. She was billed as a "singing and guitar-playing miracle". 
By her twenties, she was a draw at Harlem's Cotton Club and Carnegie Hall. Her guitar playing truly set her apart as she incorporated a pulsating swing, making her the originator of the rock 'n' roll sound.
In 1944, Tharpe recorded "Strange Things Happening Every Day," further showcasing her aggressive guitar playing style. It was the first gospel song to appear on the Billboard magazine Harlem Hit Parade, a precursor to the R&B Charts. "Strange Things" is the first Rock 'n' Roll record. 
Her legacy lives through rock ‘n’ roll. She influenced artists such as Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Tina Turner, Beyoncé,  and many more.
