CEO and co-founder George E. Johnson Sr. turned a $250 loan into one of the most influential hair-care product companies in this nation's history.

Johnson and his wife, Joan Johnson, co-founded Johnson Products in 1954 when they launched hair-care products through barbershops. Their first mass-product breakthrough was Ultra Sheen for chemically straightened hair. In the 1970s, as the "Black is Beautiful" movement exploded along with Afros, Johnson launched Afro Sheen and other hair-care products for natural curls.
